LOCAL LOVE: The OC Mix

I discovered a place where you can find phenomenal coffee, specialty pasties, succulents in every crevice, a Farmer’s Market (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and a peaceful seat in the sun. I’m talking about The OC Mix or The OC Mart Mix (the names seem to be interchangeable). Scroll through the photos below and tell me you don’t want to go there. Just go ahead and try…

You can take a look at what they offer in the dining and shopping area HERE.

If you go, let me know what you think. Better yet, tell me what you try. There is no way to experience everything The OC Mix has to give in one trip. However, together, I think we can tackle it.

I’m thoroughly enjoying SoCal at the moment…

Pregnancy & Pizza: Part 1

I keep waiting for these intense random cravings to hit. You know, pickles and ice cream, midnight macaroni and cheese, something. But throughout the last 15 weeks all I’ve wanted was pizza. And man do I want pizza, like … every. single. day.

I’ve reverted back to a 21 year old bachelorette sans alcohol. Thankfully I haven’t left my more mature taste buds behind in the journey. Gone are the days of microwaves and mall pizza. I blame this on our honeymoon in Italy, it ruined me – Pizza as I knew it failed to exist after that trip. Now pizza has been replaced by this lovely doughy, not too cheesy – but just cheesy enough disc of heavenly goodness. That’s pizza now.

So if I’m in for another 25 weeks of 24/7 pizza lust I might as well share my favorite Vegas pizza stops with you… starting with our weekly standard, Due Forni. Why do I love Due Forni so much? (Let’s ignore the fact that they’re the new off the strip darling of the Vegas restaurant scene…) I love Due Forni because it is ALWAYS the same level of awesome. There is nothing I appreciate more than consistency in my dining experience, especially when it is consistently kick ass delicious.

So off to Due Forni we go. We devour the amazingly creamy Gnocci. (People – it’s a miracle. I will eat peas in this dish. I don’t even know how or why, because I HATE peas. But here, they’re no longer peas – they’re green gems of goodness that happen to be in my Gnocci) We literally plough through the Mozzarella Bar with pesto on the side. Their pesto is so delicious I could bathe in it. Then finally finishing things up with any one of their pizzas, although I am partial to the Piccante.

And that’s just a regular Saturday afternoon.

Naturally there are many other delicious offerings on the menu, but I can’t speak for them. Because once you find something this perfect you don’t stray.

So how does pizza sound now friends? Is this merely the ramblings of a crazy lady +1 or does Due Forni get you all kinds of excited too?

*As always, we have in no way been coerced or bribed into saying nice things. In fact we’re about 99.9% sure they don’t know Breakfast Banter even exists. We just REALLY love their food.

LOCAL LOVE: the Orange County Great Park

Not many things come free these days, except I am just realizing how huge free public education is. It kind of blows my mind. Thank you grad school for enlightening me. Back to why we’re really here. I found something that is free and fun and family friendly! Seriously!

If you haven’t made your way over to the OC Great Park then you have to right this moment, or as soon as possible. It is a huge park, much of which is still being created, but what’s already there is mind blowing.

Everything is free (including parking). You can go up in a hot air balloon type thing (it’s attached to strings that are attached to the ground the whole time) that just looks like a big orange or ride around a carousel. The whole place is covered in tables for picnicking, baskets full of sports equipment to use, and grass real estate to your hearts content. If nothing else, just go to experience something free.

They also hold concert series, marathons, and are getting their community garden underway. The OC Great Park’s hopes and dreams are huge!

Expect orange. From the footballs to the historical timeline painted on the ground to the table umbrellas. Orange County takes its name to heart.

Learn more about the OC Great Park and it’s ambitions to be friends with New York City’s Central Park. Don’t quote them on that. It just seemed like a no brainer to me. What park wouldn’t want to be Central Park? It is the Jimmy Choo of parks.

Have you been to Central Park? You’ll have to tell us how the OC Great Park compares.

Happy family friendly adventures…

LOCAL LOVE: Fashion’s Night Out at the Forum Shops

People, it’s going to be a good day.

It’s Friday, and if you haven’t heard, New York Fashion Week has begun. Dun dun dun dun!

Apologies, but that definitely warranted a sound effect. In true shopping style this fabulous week kicked off with Fashion’s Night Out. In it’s amazingly successful fourth year this one night event highlights the best and brightest fashion darlings. With instore promotions, pop-up runway shows and models galore it’s a night to gussy up and head to town. And that’s precisely what we did.

In a town stocked with world class shopping choices, we strategically devoted our time to the Forum Shops at Cesars. I love Forum not just for its huge variety of retailers, but for the variety of price points offered by said retailers. What other mall has a Swatch Store a few moments walk from Cartier?

I admit, I didn’t start off so strong. With a late departure and a grumpy/tired/pouty face I put on my big girl shoes and grabbed the camera. Despite my hesitant demeanor- things perked up quickly. The minute I stepped out of valet I could feel the excitement and it was contagious. Everyone was decked out in a way that reminded me of Halloween for adult women. “Let’s all put on nice clothes and walk from one store to another to see what treats they’re offering!”

So you see I was right in my element.

My adventure started off with a trip to Fresh, who just released their uber popular lip treatment in a new Berry Shade on September 1st! Then a quick jaunt into Ted Baker where they were serving up British themed appetizers, followed by a pit stop at Vosges Haut Chocolate for a hot cup of drinking chocolate.   Next came Marc Jacobs, Reed Krakoff and many other high-end shiny stores before the night wound down at Sephora – because let’s face it (no pun intended, really) there is always something I NEED at Sephora.

What I discovered: Champagne was a staple. A DJ in the window… so typical. A String Quartet, fancy – gold Star Elie Tahari.  A photo booth style setup where the participants throw money in front of a giant elephant… okay Marc Jacobs, you win for creativity.

And yes, you read that right. Clearly no one popped by this store just for the Champage, which mind you was in a can. Classy.

By the end of the night my feet hurt (the one negative to the Forum Shops: navigating cobblestone floors in high heels), my camera was dead and my wallet a little lighter. What about you? Did you have a Fashion’s Night Out adventure? What about a great find? Think this entire post is a pile of crazy?

Let us know!

LOCAL LOVE: Restaurant Week, Las Vegas

Ready to eat for a good cause?

Yeah, I didn’t think it would be that hard of a sell…

Restaurant Week is back in Vegas from August 27th through September 2nd!

With over 80 menus from the town’s top spots and some very reasonable prices we recommend not waiting too long to make a reservation! Each menu corresponds to a selected donation amount of $4, $5, or $6 dollars which help fund Three Square Food Bank. All proceeds from Restaurant Week remain in Las Vegas, so this operation gets an A+ in the Local Love category. Heck,  if I had gold stars they would get one of those too.

So eat up and support an amazing local non-profit!

To find a participating restaurant visit the Restaurant Week webpage here: www.helpoutdineoutlv.org/

Or to learn more about Three Square, dive into their website here: www.threesquare.org/

LOCAL LOVE: ARTIFACT

What happens when you combine a group of artisans, a driven woman and a beautiful storefront? You get something that looks very similar to the new Artifact LV.

Located in The Market at Tivoli Village, Artifact is helmed by a very talented woman, and my good friend, Molly Walters. After a successful career in high end retail, Molly switched gears and decided to set about making her own dreams come true. Insert Artifact, a store dedicated to re-purposed items, vintage style and local artists.

Every nook and cranny of this boutique style store has treasures piled into it. Walking through the space is comparable to visiting an estate sale where someone went through ahead of you and sorted out all the good stuff.  And unlike the typical internet shopping experience where you rely on comments and hopefully accurate pictures, at Artifact you can touch…everything!

I’m not going to lie… I may have looked like a kid at Disneyland. Poor Ryan.

Another highlight is Molly’s gift for creating inviting displays. I wanted to live in the Art Corner, no joke. I loved the vibe so much that I talked about wire hangers to the point where Ryan created a similar style wall in our house… just to get me to shut up about it.

Of course our new wall happens to be the perfect spot for one of those print beauties I was able to snatch up. Hello Inspiration!

And don’t forget the kiddos! As a mother, Molly understands the need to please even the littlest shopaholic. Near the back of the store is a HUGE table covered in brightly colored art supplies and child-centric goodies. Artifact is planning crafting classes in the future and I have a feeling that many little masterpieces will be made at that table.

Not really a crafter? I know you Soul Sister, you prefer to wear your art. How do mood boards centered around style icons from the past and bedecked with vintage finds sound?

Put down the bubbly and head over to Artifact because they have that too! Whether you need an entire ensemble or just a bauble, you’ll find it here. You should have heard my justification skills at work… man I wanted that green dress.

On a personal note, I have to wish Molly a very BIG congratulations on Artifact. Not only are the items inside an inspiration, but so is the woman behind the desk. It’s only recently opened, but we understand why Molly all ready has plans for an additional three locations.

We definitely want more! If you do too, then head over to Tivoli Village and visit Artifact! Or if you’re more of a social media maven, give them some love on their Artifact LV Facebook Page.

You’ll probably see me there, drooling over the latest treasure.

LOCAL LOVE: Seattle Great Wheel

People, people, people, there is nothing I love more than a Ferris Wheel, and the new Seattle Great Wheel opened just in time for me to take a ride before I head out of this lovely state.

On Pier 57, the Great Wheel has it all: hot dog stands, a view of the water, tourists. It is worth the $13 tickets for sure.

The view of Seattle if breathtaking (as seen behind us).

Also, right now the Great Wheel is open until 1am. The perfect opportunity to get a twinkling view of the city.

Don’t take my word it. Check it out for yourself. You won’t be sorry. Visit their website- HERE. And go and give them some local love of your own.

Enjoying my last Seattle moments…

LOCAL LOVE: White Moustache Urban Adventure Co.

I was invited to a ceviche making class this month. Being that I’m saying yes to everything I possibly can, learning how to make ceviche was no different. For those of you who are wondering what the heck ceviche is I will tell you. There are different variations but pretty much its a Mexican dish consisting of raw fish marinated in citrus juices with salsaish things mixed in. Is that technical enough for you? I hope so. Don’t worry there will be recipes to follow that are actually technical.

This turned out to be the coolest thing I have done in Seattle to date. My friend Alison and I showed up to a little family owned restaurant called Cantinetta on a corner of a quaint Seattle neighborhood. We could see the entire Seattle skyline from the entrance. Breathtaking.

Immediately, Bryce Lathrop, the founder of White Moustache Urban Adventure Co. (WM), handed us an iced cold Modelo, introduced us to the chefs, and gave us the run down. I learned that I was at a WM event. WM is Seattle’s only eating tour on wheels that caters to your personal tasting desires. This night was different. There were no wheels involved. Instead, Bryce wanted Chef Gabriel Chavez to showcase his talent for an entire evening. I discovered a gourmet 4 course meal, created from Chef Gabriel Chavez’s family recipes, was in my very near future. Being college-loan broke this doesn’t happen too often. I was giddy. On top of a gourmet meal, I had great hopes of eating authentic Mexican food in Seattle. Definitely something I had given up on years ago.

The tables were set with cloth napkins, a single oil candle, and actual silverware. Quite fancy if you ask me. The main dining area was very open and lined with large windows. Wooden benches ran around the entire perimeter sprinkled with throw pillows to add the perfect homy/comfy feeling. Nothing was over stated. The neutral walls framed with dark wood, natural light, and energy from the WM crew were enough to blow any 4 star place out of the water. Everyone seemed happy to be working and each person I came in contact with was sincerely excited to make our experience one to remember.

After Alison and I chose our table, a little two-seater by the front window, and mingling for a bit everyone gathered around Chef Chavez as he demonstrated step-by-step two of his family ceviche recipes. He opened up a bit about where he grew up, what ingredients were prominent, his grandmothers cooking, and his dream of opening up a real Mexican restaurant in the heart of Seattle. A great need if you ask me.

Chef Chavez is humble. He didn’t just teach us how to throw some ingredients into a bowl and call it good. He showed us his heart for bringing good food and people together. I didn’t once see him without an ear-to-ear grin.

1. 1st course- Salt Water Ceviche & Fresh Water Ceviche. You can find the recipes HERE 2. 4th course- Flan 3. 3rd course- Carnitas Tacos 4. Alternate 1st course- Soy Ceviche for all you vegetarians
NOTE- the 2nd course was Salsa Verde. Unfortunately I did not snap a picture in my excitement to gobble it down. Believe me though, it was good.

Interested in learning more about the man who made WM a reality? Read my interview with Bryce Lathrop below.

Q- Lindsey of Breakfast Banter: Are you a native Seattleite?
A- Bryce of White Moustache: My mom is from Snohomish; my Dad from Marysville. I was born in Oregon and moved back here in High School. I graduated from Snohomish High School. My wife, Amy, was born here and raised on Lake Roesiger. Both our kids were born in Everett.

Q: Where did the idea for a Seattle food tour on wheels come from?
A: This town is full of unique neighborhoods and packed full of great food. Trying to explore every corner and find  them all is a full time job. I figured that would be a good job and could help others save time and get out of their bubble.

Q: It is obvious you love both food and people. Has it always been that way?
A: I like to say I’ve been eating my whole life. However, It wasn’t until I married and met my in-laws did I develop an appreciation for what good food was supposed to taste like. They still refer to those early days as “Bryce’s training days.”

Q: Can you share the craziest experience you’ve had on a WM tour?
A: Each tour is unique and comes with it’s own bit of crazy. The most memorable bits are when folks have very firm ideas of what they will not eat but haven’t shared those opinions with me, and at the end they loved those foods the best. I’ve learned to limit the upcoming menu and keep some element of surprise at each stop. The reactions never cease to surprise me.

Q: Where do you see WM in 5 years? A reality TV show maybe?
A: A reality show would be great! Most likely we’ll keep the model the same but just expand into other cities with their own unique tastes. Portland and San Francisco are on the radar.

Q: If you had to choose your 3 top favorite foods, what would they be?
A: It changes all the time. If I was to be executed tonight, my last meal would be a green tea milkshake from Katsu Burger, a glass of roasted corn tea from Joule, a bowl of risotto from Cantinetta with a soft poached egg on top, and fried chicken from Ma’ Ono.

Q: Can you yourself cook?
A: I can. I am really good at smoking pork butt and I bake a mean five-layer Coconut Cake. Oh, and every Saturday morning, my wife and I make Liege-style waffles for our neighbors. The toppings alternate from sweet to savory from week to week.

Q: Any words of wisdom/caution for those contemplating a WM tour?
A: Be brave, come hungry, and wear stretchy pants.

Q: Where did the name White Moustache come from?
A: It came from the foam that sticks to your lip while sipping a great latte.

Thank you Chef Gabriel Chavez, Emran Chowdhury, Bryce Lathrop, and Pablo Rodriguez-Cordero (pictured below from left to right) for a spectacular evening and the best food I’ve had in months.

Well folks, if you find yourself in Seattle and in the mood for a quirky and delicious food tour hit WM up. I’m convinced you won’t be disappointed. And if you’re feeling really adventurous you can invite me along…if you want ;)

Keep your eyes peeled for WM in Portland, San Fransisco, and maybe Food Network. They’re gonna go far!

Mouth watering salutations…

LOVE FEST FRIDAY: Starbucks’ We-Love-You Fridays

Who doesn’t need a pick-me-up coffee on Friday afternoons? I tend to hit the coffee pot/shop Friday mornings, afternoons, and evenings.  Before you think that I’m somewhere up there on Gilmore Girls coffee drinking status you should know I order half-cafs after my morning jolt. Most of the time. Although I do aspire to be them.

Back to my point…

Starbucks, the Seattle found coffee shop that swept our nation, knows us coffee drinkers need some extra love on Fridays. That’s why if you find yourself in Seattle today, or any upcoming Friday for that matter, walk your butt into a Starbucks (there are 9 thousand) at 3pm and you will walk away with some little free token you can use to get to know the city better. SBUX calls it “We-Love-You Fridays.” Who doesn’t love something free with their coffee?

If you want to know more go -HERE

If you’re good with the basic details, here is the gist:

Today, May 25th- walk away with one admission to SAM (Seattle Art Museum)

June 1st- walk away with four tickets to an exclusive film screening of Sister Act at The Paramount

June 8th- walk away with one admission to the Woodland Park Zoo

Maybe I will see you there…it is my mission in life to get to know Seattle up close and personal right now. Just sayin’.

I also just want to send out some love to this beautiful city! Seattle, you will always have a part of my heart.

Stesha and all you readers not in Seattle, maybe you can seek out some lovely giveaways in your area and share them with us??? Let’s spread the love people.

Happy Friday everyone and go get some love from SBUX!

LOCAL LOVE: The Container Store Comes to Vegas!

I hope you’re ready for some serious photo love, because yesterday Breakfast Banter got a sneak peek of The Container Store’s newest location in Las Vegas! Oh yeah, organization for all!

Not excited yet? How about now…

And this is what happens when you let grown women tour an entire store dedicated to clean, colorful, organizational goodness….it’s like the adult version of a ball pit. I couldn’t “contain” myself!

Back to business. Have you met Elfa? You should. Elfa is The Container Store’s best selling modular shelving and drawer system. Even better – it is completely customizable. You bring in the dimensions of your space, they craft the perfect combination, you buy, go home and voila! And if I learned anything yesterday it is that there is NO limit to where Elfa can go and what Elfa can sort.

Elfa, your personal butler that keeps track of all your stuff but never talks back. Brilliant.

For those of you overwhelmed at the idea of walking the aisles at The Container Store, admittedly it is a bit overwhelming. You can simply shop online, drive to the container store, park in a super special “Click and Pickup” parking space and some friendly Container Store staff members will bring your goodies to your car. Seriously people this is easier than navigating the line at In-N-Out

For those of you not located in the sunny Southwest, the container store currently has approximately 80% of their products online!

For the rest of us…drive, run, walk, or skip to The Container Store at Town Square this weekend. Not only will you find a bevy of amazing items to organize every last nook and cranny of your home, but 10% of opening weekend sales (Saturday and Sunday) will be donated to the Junior League of Las Vegas!

Shopping for a cause definitely gets the Breakfast Banter seal of approval.

Need another reason? How about twenty…

The Grand Opening is this Saturday, May 12th, 2012! Only leaving you about 24 hours to finalize your must have list.

Until then you’ll just have to…

Visit The Container Store for more information or to shop online!
